Ignorant Disciples and Fools

June 23, 2014 by Michael Healan

Discipleship is a function of scholarship. I have that sentence on my business cards to make sure that anyone coming into contact with Westlake Christian Academy will be apprized that we are not simply a five-day Sunday School. A true, effective disciple of Jesus Christ will be knowledgeable, curious, able to connect to the world around him. God has never placed a premium upon ignorance or anti-intellectualism. While it is true that He welcomes into His flock those of the least academic gifting, the true child of God will have a thirst for learning so that he may love the Lord with all of his mind.

Thus it is incumbent upon those of us involved in the education of the church, whether at the preschool level or the graduate school, that we be zealous in our pursuit of academic excellence. Kingdom work is greatly enhanced by those who can effectively meet the challenges of a broken world with a message which is at once intellectually informed as well as Spirit filled. Our task is a thoughtful one. [Read more…]

WCA Welcomes Two New Faculty

June 18, 2014 by Kenley

This August there will be two new faces among the Faculty at Westlake. We are so thankful that God continues to provide such wonderful people to work at WCA and are delighted to introduce them to you now.

Stefanie Betori

We are delighted to announce that Miss Stefanie Betori will be joining our faculty this fall. Miss Betori will be teaching third grade, taking the place of her own third grade teacher, Mrs. Jackson, who just retired after 27 years at Westlake. Hardly able to contain her excitement for this move, Miss Betori is realizing a dream she has had for a long time. Mrs. Jackson was actually the inspiration for her choosing to become a teacher.

Growing up in this area, Miss Betori graduated from Westlake in 2008, went on to obtain her BA in education from Cedarville University (2012) and has taught in two other Christian schools since then. She traveled to New South Wales, Australia, for her senior year clinical teaching experience (that’s pretty cool).

Concerning her vision, she writes, “The Lord has definitely called me to teaching. It feels so fulfilling to know that I am in the profession that the Lord designed me for. Developing students’ beliefs at a young age is very important, and I love the opportunity to strengthen them in following God’s Word. My passion drives me to be my best so that my students receive the best.”

Miss Betori lives with her mother and father in Gurnee. She has a desire to bring her talents in theater and singing to her classroom and Westlake’s program. No doubt she will be a valuable asset to our drama and music departments as well.

Marc Tantillo

We are delighted to announce that Mr. Marc Tantillo will be joining our faculty this fall. Mr. Tantillo will work with Mr. Flemming, our school Discipleship Director, and have discipleship oversight of grades 1-8, with special emphasis on junior high mentoring opportunities. He will teach Bible classes for grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 as well as two sections of junior high social studies. In addition to bringing in his passion for engaging and mentoring youth, this move will bring other benefits to our program such as freeing up other faculty to allow them to be even more productive.

Mr. Tantillo and his wife, Nicole, and their four children live here in Grayslake just several blocks from Westlake. He has a bachelors degree from Trinity International University (2002) and a masters degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (2010). He has obtained his teaching certification and is eager to work in a school setting. As a long-time resident of Lake County, he understands our community, its culture and needs, and has a special love this part of Illinois. Although his present position as counselor with the Lake County Health Department is not directly related to working with youth, he has served seven years in church settings working specifically with junior high age children.

Mr. Tantillo strongly desires to mentor students. “I want to assist Westlake in the making of life-long disciples. I would love the opportunity to build up, equip, envision, and teach the excellence of Jesus to a new generation of church members, leaders, missionaries, business men/women, teachers, evangelists, husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers.”

Education and the Functional Centrality of the Gospel

June 9, 2014 by Michael Healan

One of my favorite movies to watch with children is Monsters Inc, primarily because so much of the humor in the dialog is too sophisticated for children to fully appreciate, yet appeals to me. I asked a group of young people to name some of the main characters in that movie, and none of them responded with what I thought was the key: the door. Doors are all through that movie, and every major turning point in it deals with a door—a closet door to be exact. That door gave access for all the monsters into children’s bedrooms to extract their scream energy.

Most Christians view the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ very much as a door. [Read more…]

WCA Lego Robotics Club

June 6, 2014 by Kenley

Join the Westlake Lego Team!

Attention parents of 4th – 8th grade girls and boys. The LEGO Robotics Club will soon be starting up for the 2015 school year. For this upcoming year, the plan is for us to participate in the First LEGO League (FLL) 2015 Challenge: “Trash Trek”.

Cost: $50 per student, payable by the second meeting (you can try out the club at the first meeting free-of-charge and see if you want to continue). Covers “admission” to every meeting, all Legos (no one should bring their own so they are not mixed up), t-shirts, and a few treats along the way.

When: The plan is to meet most Sunday afternoons (2pm to 5pm) times during the fall, starting on August 30th, at the school cafeteria. The tournament season begins sometime in November (TBD) where the students can compete against other schools.

Meeting schedule to be announced soon.

Questions Contact Mr. Flemming. [email protected]

or 847-548-6209

Steve Ness [email protected]

or 847-571-5079

Due to the FLL rules, there is a planned maximum of 15 students and no more than 10 students can be allowed to “compete” in any of the tournaments.

Many Hands Service Project

June 6, 2014 by Kenley

“Many hands make light work” is how the old saying goes. Upper school students who are ready to pitch in and make an impact on our school and who wouldn’t mind piling up some community service hours too can join us on the 11th & 12th. Space is limited to the first 15 students. *Also, a few parent volunteers to oversee some projects would be very helpful.

Here are the details.

WHO: Upper Grade students (and a parent or two)

WHAT: This is Westlake’s own mini-replacement of the annual Lake County youth group service project called Revolution of Love. We’ll paint, clean, wash, and fix our way to a better school.

WHEN: THIS COMING Wednesday, June 11, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Thursday, June 12, 8 a.m. until noon. Signing up for one of the days or part of the time is allowed but not preferred.

WHERE: At the school, duh. Actually, if we have enough participants a team will be going to do our Adopt-A-Highway project (*parent(s) particularly needed here) on Washington Road on Thursday morning.

WHY: See WHO? above. These hours will count toward your community service hours requirement.

BRING: A bag lunch, water bottle, work gloves, and clothing that is modest and you wouldn’t mind if it gets ruined.

COST: Nada.

BONUS OPTION: On Thursday, stay for lunch (your own bag lunch) and then join us at 12:30 for a Bible Study for grades 7-12 led by Allie Jackson. The topic, Parables, God’s Secret Messages. The brief study will be followed by gender and age-specific small groups for prayer and accountability. Lastly, we’ll break out the water balloon launchers for some fun! We’ll wrap up around 2:30.
