Spring Instrumental Concert

Idioms

Can you guess the Bible references to each idiom?
“By the skin of your teeth”
“I’ll give you my two cents worth”
“A leopard can’t change his spots
“There’s nothing new under the sun”
“Sign of the times”
“Thorn in the flesh”
“From the cradle to the grave”
“Handwriting on the wall”
“Fly in the ointment”

President Teddy Roosevelt

“The teachings of the Bible are so interwoven and entwined with our civic and social life that it would be impossible for us to figure what life would be if these teachings were removed.”

President Zachary Taylor

“The Bible is the best of books. I wish it were in the hands of everyone. It is indispensable to the safety and permanence of our institutions. Especially should the Bible be placed in the hands of the young. It is the best schoolbook in the world. I would that all of our people were brought up under the influence of that Holy Book.”

Benjamin Franklin’s Speech

In this situation of this Assembly groping as it were in the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our understandings? In the beginning of the contest with G. Britain, when we were sensible of danger we had daily prayer in this room for the Divine Protection. [PAUSE] — Our prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a Superintending providence in our favor.  And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? Or do we imagine that we no longer need His assistance.

I have lived, Sir, a long time and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth — that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings that “except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel, and we shall become a reproach and a bye word down to future age.

I therefore beg leave to move — that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business.

Dr. Benjamin Rush

“The Bible, when not read in schools, is seldom read in any subsequent period of life.”

“The Bible contains more knowledge necessary to man in his present state than any other book in the world.”

You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

Psalm 6:6–8

The wind blows to the south
and goes around to the north;
around and around goes the wind,
and on its circuits the wind returns.

Ecclesiastes 1:6
