School Supplies

May 23, 2023 by WCA Office Staff

Want to save time? You can order a grade-specific school supply kit from School Toolbox. This year, consumable paper products (paper towels, boxes of tissues, Ziploc bags, Clorox Wipes, etc.) are included in the cost of the supply kit. If you purchase before July 2, 2023, school supply kits are shipped directly to the school and will be delivered to the classroom for you. If you purchase after July 2, 2023, you can have the box shipped directly to your home. Please refer to the School ToolBox website for additional charges and shipping times.

If you purchase your own school supplies (including ship-to-home from School Toolbox), please bring them with you to Back-to-School Night (K-12) or Meet the Teacher (PS/PK). Lists for each grade are available here.

Each elementary child (grades 1-6) is also expected to bring:

  • book bag or backpack (non-roller type) to fit in a locker gym shoes -
  • non-marking soles, to be kept at school & used only for PE
  • earbuds or headphones - labeled with child’s name, to be kept at school

7th–12th grade students will receive school supply lists from their teachers at the beginning of the school year. They will need general items such as filler paper, pens, pencils, etc.

Students in grades 7–12 are also required to have a Chromebook. For 2023–24, Westlake will be offering a group Chromebook order. We encourage families who need a new Chromebook to use this option. Ordering through the school will make the set-up of your student’s Chromebook faster and easier. Additional details are available here.

Order Your Chromebook

May 16, 2023 by Amanda Rash

Westlake uses 1:1 technology in grades 3-12. Elementary students use school-provided Chromebooks that remain in the classroom. Students in 7–12th grade must provide their own Chromebook.

For 2023–24, Westlake will be offering a group Chromebook order. We encourage families who need a new Chromebook to use this option. Ordering through the school will make the set-up of your student’s Chromebook faster and easier.

Orders must be placed by June 30, 2023. Parents will be billed through their FACTS account, with payment due by July 15, 2023.

Order Chromebook

Chromebooks will be shipped directly to the school. Students will be able to pick up their Chromebooks at Secondary Student Orientation on Thursday, August 3rd, 2023.

PROVIDING YOUR OWN CHROMEBOOK:
New students and 7th graders who choose to provide their own Chromebook will be required to schedule a summer appointment for installing the school’s student management software on their Chromebook. Any previous user data will be wiped from the Chromebook at this time.

Due to the higher number of students enrolled in 7th–12th grade, all students must have their Chromebooks set up with the school’s management software prior to the first day of school.

6th Grade Service Learning Project

April 6, 2023 by Amanda Rash

REFUGEES: People who are forced to flee their country due to war or persecution. They want to return home, but they can’t.

In conjunction with Exodus World Service, a Christian organization, and in response to reading A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, the sixth grade would like to help a refugee family in need. Chicagoland is receiving many, many refugees every day and Exodus World Service is helping about 15 families per week to settle here.

Just imagine fleeing your country in fear for your life, experiencing many weeks or months of travel (most likely on foot through treacherous areas), at the mercy of dangerous strangers, perhaps in hiding, not enough food or water for you or your children, living in a filthy and dangerous refugee camp for who-knows-how-long, finally getting on an airplane, and landing in a foreign city. You are once again at the mercy of strangers. A friendly face greets you at the airport and helps you and your family into a car. They drive you through the city and stop at an apartment building. The door to the apartment is opened and there waiting for you is a group of smiling faces who have just set up your furnished apartment with full cupboards, a well stocked refrigerator, soap, clean bed linens, fluffy towels, pots, pans, dishes … the list goes on. For the first time in months or years, the only things you have to worry about is getting your children clean, fed, and put to bed in a safe place. What a remarkable relief!

Most refugee families arrive in a new country with only the clothes on their backs … literally. They have no money, no possessions, don’t speak the language, don’t understand the culture, and have no place to live. Exodus World Service helps with ALL of these issues. Most importantly, they share the love of JESUS. Please help us to be the hands and feet of Jesus to these struggling families.

How Can You Help?

6th Grade would like your help with filling a Welcome to America! Pack with basic items for the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom along with a month’s worth of food to get them started.

We will be collecting household items and food staples from

Tuesday, April 11th until Tuesday, April 25th

  • Sign up to bring the items you’d like to donate (due by Friday, April 28th)
  • Send the items to school with your child to place in donation boxes
  • Grade 6 will deliver the items to a refugee family in need.

Emergency Closing

February 15, 2023 by WCA Office Staff

WCA places safety as a top priority, and that includes traveling to and from school during times of inclement weather. On days when the school is open but travel conditions in your area are still treacherous, it is important for you to keep your child at home until travel conditions improve. If conditions improve later in the morning, you may bring your child for the remainder of the school day. Determining the safety of road conditions in your area is a parental decision.

Of course, we want as many children as possible to be in attendance but not at the risk of their safety. Please weigh carefully whether or not to attempt to come to school.

rotary_telephoneIf school is open but you choose to keep your child at home, please submit an absence form online or in the WCA app.

If you’re wondering whether or not Westlake will be open due to the weather, you can find out in a few different ways:

  1. Check your phone for a text alert (make sure your cell phone number is current in your FACTS Family Portal Account)
  2. Check the Westlake website for a homepage notification (or this page for a header notification)
  3. Call our office and listen for an automated message: 847-548-6209
  4. Check your email; we will send each family an email by 6:00 AM

Please note: Westlake no longer uses Emergency Closing Center to report school closures.
